What is a DVD Ripper?

Let's say you're tired of buying DVDs, only to have them scratch and become unplayable.  What should you do?  What are your options?  Well, a lot of people will create a backup of their DVD on their hard drive.  In order to do that, you need what is called a DVD Ripper.  Simply put, a DVD Ripper takes the information encoded on the DVD, and transfers it to your hard drive.  In a sense it "rips" the information off of the DVD.     Of course, this is simple in theory, but complex and execution.  Depending upon the type of DVD Ripper you use, you may end up with either a high-quality replication, or something that is impossible to watch.  Or, you may run into an encoding error, a corrupted file, or even worse.  There can be a lot of headaches involved, unless you know how to properly use this type of product.   It all starts with using the right software.  You need a DVD Ripper that can properly handle a variety of formats.  In addition, if you ever need to use your DVD backup on your computer, you need a way to burn it onto a disc.  Take this into consideration, if you're looking to purchase DVD ripping software, to see if you can find a bundled software that also includes burning software. The thing you have to be concerned about  is that the timecode stays intact.  Otherwise, you may get something resembling a Chinese kung fu movie, where the characters mouths don't sync up with the words they speak.   Other things to consider are the requirements needed for the software to run on your computer.  Make sure you purchase software that is compatible with your computer, and that you have enough resources to run the software.  The better your processor and RAM, the less chance there is of a problem happening when you're ripping the DVD.  Of course, if you go shopping for DVD ripper software, you may be overwhelmed by the choices that are available to you.  However, most of them do the same thing.  Just make sure you purchase software that is able to rip DVDs for your purposes, and that is unlikely to face trouble with the movie studios, or require an upgrade as soon as you purchase it.
